The Purple Cloud

The Purple Cloud, M. P. Shiel. Tartarus Press, 2004. Limited 400. Like all Tartarus books, it's a beautiful edition (with fantastic interior illustrations). If you like gothic novels, this one is super. I enjoyed William Hope Hodson's Nightland--a book very similar to this one in both content and time period--but the writing was unnecessarily archaic. Shiel, on the other hand, writes great and his tale about the fate of humanity is just as good, not to mention how entertaining his 'hero" is (after being alone sixteen years, the guy comes across a young, nice looking woman and his first impulse is to . . . kill her! . . . I laughed so hard. I thought for sure there'd be a sex scene. But not with this lunatic. Hehe.) A great read if you like apocalyptic scenarios.
